CODEX ALIMENTARIUS
The Codex Alimentarius Commission is a bureaucratic body of the United Nations. It has been funded by the World Health Organization and the Food and Agricultural Organization of the UN. It is charged with developing a food code (hence the name) that regulates everything that is eaten, including all nutritional supplements. An extremely restrictive Vitamin and Mineral Guideline was ratified on July 4, 2005 in Rome. The claimed purpose of the code is to standardize all foods and supplements so that trade between nations can be covered by the same regulations. As a member of the World Trade Organization, the USA is bound to follow the code regulations or suffer serious financial penalties in world trade.
Why should I care? The code as ratified makes it illegal to make health claims for nutritional supplements. It makes it illegal to make vitamins of a concentration sufficient to have any significant benefit on health or illness. It forbids dissemination of any information about nutrients from not only lay people but also health professionals. Some of the proposed Maximum Permissible Limits for selected vitamins are niacin – 34 milligrams daily, Vitamin C - 224 milligrams daily, Vitamin D - 5 micrograms daily, Vitamin E – 15 IU daily. The code allows food to be contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, and antibiotic and drug residues at toxic levels.
Worldwide implementation of these regulations is going forward and the European Union already is starting enforcement.
The consequences of this scientifically fraudulent and morally repugnant code being imposed upon an unexpecting world will be disastrous. Acceleration of preexisting chronic disease will occur rapidly when many people using high potency supplements are denied access. Modern industrial agriculture produces food of low nutritional quality due to mineral depletion in the soil, overuse of chemical fertilizers, genetic engineered foods, and use of synthetic growth hormones in livestock. As people continue to eat this food because it is all that is available, their health will decline at a young age. This is already happening in the USA. The pharmaceutical companies will continue to reap ever large profits and accumulate more power as there drugs become more necessary to keep people alive.
Our media is not covering this threat to our health even though it dwarfs any possible consequence of bioterrorism. Our politicians are not aware of this threat. A sustained and vigorous grassroots movement is needed to let our elected officials know that a vote to accept the dictates of the Codex in America is a sure way to be voted out of office. The Dietary Supplements Health and Education Act of 1994 passed Congress unanimously because enough Americans made it clear that to do otherwise was unacceptable.
